Katla or Vatnajökull?
Katla fits a South Coast route based around Vík and is the more practical natural-cave choice for many summer visitors. Its signature is the meeting of clear blue ice, black ash and volcanic terrain.
Vatnajökull is the stronger winter-led destination. It suits travellers continuing into Southeast Iceland and offers the broadest sense of natural-cave variety, with the important caveat that routes and formations are reassessed continuously.
